Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question about Taylor Wood Crafts? Here are answers to some of the questions I’m asked most often about my handcrafted wooden products, laser engraving, delivery, care, and my woodworking journey.

How do I clean my wooden chopping board?

Wash your board by hand in the sink using warm water and a little mild soap. Dry it straight away with a towel and leave it standing upright if possible so air can circulate around it.

Do not put wooden boards in the dishwasher. The heat, water and detergent can damage the wood, cause it to crack or warp, and shorten the life of the board.

How long will my board last?

These boards are made to last for many years and, with the right care, can become a board for life. If the surface becomes marked with knife cuts over time, it can usually be sanded back and refinished with a fresh coat of food-safe oil.

That ability to refresh and restore the board is one of the reasons I love working with solid hardwood. A well-cared-for wooden board can continue to look beautiful and work well for a very long time.

What finish do you use on your boards?

I use food-safe finishes that are suitable for wooden chopping boards and serving boards. My preferred products are Osmo Top Oil and Clapham’s Beeswax & Hemp Oil Wood Wax.

Osmo Top Oil provides a durable, food-safe finish that protects the wood while enhancing the natural grain. Clapham’s Beeswax & Hemp Oil Wood Wax is a natural wax finish that nourishes the timber, helps maintain the board, and leaves a beautiful soft sheen.

Do you ship to the UK and Ireland?

Yes, I ship throughout the UK and Ireland. I carefully package each order so it arrives safely and in the best condition possible.

For local customers, I’m also happy to meet up for collection or local sales when suitable arrangements can be made.

Is this your full-time job?

No, Taylor Wood Crafts is not my main employment. It is my evening and weekends project, and a creative outlet that I’m passionate about growing.

One of the things I’m proud of is that 100% of the sales go back into the business. Every purchase helps fund new tools, quality wood, workshop improvements and the continued growth of Taylor Wood Crafts.

What got you into woodworking?

Woodworking gives me an outlet to express my creativity and build things with my hands. I enjoy the process of learning new skills, experimenting with ideas, and turning a piece of timber into something useful and beautiful.

It has grown from a personal creative outlet into a business where I can keep developing my skills while creating products that people can use and enjoy.

Are you a carpenter?

No, I’m not a carpenter and I haven’t completed an apprenticeship. My woodworking skills are self-taught and have been developed through practice, learning from experience, and spending time in the workshop.

I’ve also been very fortunate to have a few good friends who have supported me and shared their knowledge during this journey.

Is Taylor Wood Crafts your business?

Yes, Taylor Wood Crafts is my business. I have a degree in graphic design, which has been a huge support in this journey.

That design background helps with creating new product ideas, social media, logo design, website building and all of the promotional material for the business. It means I can combine creativity, design and woodworking into one growing business.

Can I request a custom or personalised product?

Yes, absolutely. I offer professional laser engraving on many products, including names, dates, messages, logos and custom designs.

I also welcome bespoke commissions, so if you have an idea for a custom size, shape, engraving or unique wooden creation, feel free to get in touch and we can discuss the possibilities.

Do you use Irish-sourced timber?

Wherever possible, I use mainly Irish-sourced hardwoods. I carefully select quality timber and choose the best wood for each project, always aiming to create products that are durable, beautiful and built to last.
