Handmade vs High Street: What's the Difference?

When you're buying a wooden chopping board, serving board or gift, it's easy to look at two products and wonder why one costs considerably more than the other. At first glance, they may appear to do exactly the same job.

The difference often comes down to how the product is made, what materials are used, the level of craftsmanship involved and how individual the finished piece is.

High-street products can be a practical and affordable choice, while handmade products offer something different: carefully selected materials, individual craftsmanship, personalisation and a product with its own character.

What Does "Handmade" Really Mean?

Handmade doesn't simply mean that a product has been touched by hand.

A genuinely handcrafted wooden product involves a series of individual processes, from selecting and preparing the timber through to shaping, sanding, finishing and quality checking the completed piece.

At Taylor Wood Crafts, each product is made individually in my workshop. I select the timber for its suitability, work it into the required shape and finish it carefully to bring out the natural character of the wood. This means that every piece is slightly different.

Handmade vs High-Street Products

Mass-produced products are generally manufactured in large quantities using highly efficient production processes. This allows retailers to offer products at lower prices and in large numbers.

Handmade products are produced individually or in much smaller batches. This means more time can be spent selecting materials, refining the design and paying attention to the details of each individual piece. Neither approach is automatically right or wrong. They simply offer different things to the customer.

If your priority is finding an inexpensive product quickly, a high-street option may be ideal. If you're looking for something individual, made from carefully selected hardwood and created with attention to detail, handmade may be worth the additional investment.

The Difference in Materials

One of the biggest differences between wooden products can be the timber itself. A product described simply as a "wooden chopping board" doesn't necessarily tell you what species of wood has been used, where it came from or how it has been selected.

At Taylor Wood Crafts, I work with a range of carefully selected hardwoods including Oak, Irish Elm, Ash and European Walnut, alongside other specialist timbers.

Every Piece Is Different

One of the things I love most about working with natural hardwood is that no two pieces are exactly the same.

The grain, colour, knots and natural markings can vary from one board to another. Even two products made from the same species can look completely different. This is part of the appeal of handmade wooden products.

Rather than buying an identical item that thousands of other people may own, you're buying something with its own individual character.

Craftsmanship and Attention to Detail

A handmade wooden product involves much more than simply cutting a piece of timber to size. Depending on the product, the process can involve preparing and flattening the timber, cutting and shaping components, creating joints or patterns, sanding multiple surfaces, applying finishes and carefully inspecting the finished product.

For products such as end grain butcher blocks, the process becomes even more involved, with individual pieces of timber being arranged, glued, cut and reassembled to create the characteristic end grain pattern.

The time involved in making something by hand is one of the reasons a handcrafted product can cost more than a mass-produced alternative.

Personalisation and Bespoke Designs

One of the biggest advantages of buying handmade is the ability to create something specifically for you. At Taylor Wood Crafts, many products can be personalised with laser engraving, including names, dates, messages, logos and other designs.

I can also discuss bespoke projects where a standard product isn't quite what you're looking for. That could mean a different size, a particular combination of hardwoods, a specific design or a completely custom project.

This level of flexibility is difficult to achieve with mass-produced products designed to be manufactured in large quantities.

Buying Handmade Supports a Small Business

When you purchase a handmade product from a small business, you're supporting the person who designed, made, finished and packaged it.

At Taylor Wood Crafts, every order contributes directly to a small Northern Ireland woodworking business.

Where possible, I source hardwood from Irish suppliers and focus on creating products that combine natural materials with traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques such as CNC machining and laser engraving.

Which Should You Choose?

There isn't one answer that applies to everyone.

A high-street product can be a sensible choice if price, availability and convenience are your main priorities.

A handmade product may be the better choice if you're looking for individual craftsmanship, natural hardwood, unique grain, personalisation, bespoke options and something designed to last.

The important thing is to understand what you're buying and choose the product that best fits your needs and budget.
